The Digest

Why your gut is the starting point, not a side note.

July 2026 · Charvi Bubna Altamirano

Most health plans treat digestion as one piece of a larger puzzle: something to mention once, then move past on the way to the "real" work. In functional nutrition, we flip that order. Gut health is usually where we start, not where we end up after everything else fails.

Here is why. Your gut does far more than break down food. It houses the majority of your immune system, produces a large share of your body's serotonin, and acts as the gatekeeper for what actually gets absorbed from everything you eat. When that gatekeeper is inflamed, imbalanced, or under chronic stress, the effects show up everywhere except where you would expect them.

Clients come to me with skin flare-ups, stubborn fatigue, mood swings, joint pain, and stalled weight loss. Almost none of them mention their gut first. But when we dig into their history, a pattern shows up again and again: years of antibiotic use, chronic low-grade stress, a diet heavy on processed food and light on fiber diversity, or an undiagnosed sensitivity that never got investigated.

Symptoms are downstream

This is the part that surprises people most. Bloating and irregularity are the obvious gut symptoms. But skin issues, brain fog, seasonal allergies, and even hormone imbalances often trace back to what is happening in your digestive system. If we only treat the visible symptom, we are managing the smoke without ever looking at the fire.

"You cannot out-supplement a gut that is under constant stress. You have to address the root, not just the symptom."

That does not mean every health issue is a gut issue. It means the gut is one of the first places worth ruling in or out, because so much downstream function depends on it working well.

What this actually looks like in practice

In our work together, this usually starts with a careful history: your digestion patterns, your stress load, your sleep, and often a blood panel to see what is happening beneath the surface. From there we build a plan specific to your biology, not a generic elimination diet pulled from the internet. Some clients need more fiber diversity. Others need less inflammatory load. Some need to address stress before food even enters the conversation, because a nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight will not digest well no matter what is on the plate.

The goal is never a rigid protocol. It is understanding your gut well enough that the rest of your health starts making more sense, and holds over time instead of requiring constant intervention.
